RRSA Article of the Week: Article 24

Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

The focus surrounding this Article is Mental Health Awareness Week, which occurs every year in May. It is an ideal time for us all to think about mental health, tackle stigma, and discuss how we can create school environments that protect our mental wellbeing. I will specifically be focusing on the core principle 鈥 we are incredible human beings- and how we can nurture all parts of ourselves to live our greater purpose.

You may want to talk about how we look after our physical, social, emotional and intellectual wellbeing e.g. by partaking in hobbies, spending time with our friends, doing things with our family etc.

Here is an activity you can do at home. Watch this video then make a poster to give people ideas of who they could talk to if they are feeling worried. Link this to Articles 12 and 24.

We’re inviting anyone and everyone to join us for a special session on Sunday 19th May at 10am till 1pm – and help us plant our produce, flowers and herbs.

Principals Update

Yesterday we wished all of our Year 11 students the best of luck in their upcoming GCSE examinations. They opened the exam series with a Religious Studies on Thursday morning. Mr Gajjar and Mrs Kholia shared the below prayer with our pupils to wish them every success in the next few weeks:
鈥楳y dear Lord Krishna (or a name of God relevant to you) I pray to You that as I enter the exam, that You will fill my heart with perfect peace that only comes from You. Please also give me clarity of thought, and prompt my mind to remember all the things that I have studied. Give me the wisdom and the ability to transfer my thoughts to paper. I express my gratitude to all my teachers and to my parents who have supported me on this journey. Now I will focus on completing my exams as a loving offering unto You.鈥

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Skegro for her support of the PRE department since October. Today will be her last day on site, but she will continue working with the team remotely one day a week for the remainder of the academic year. I have had the pleasure of seeing the PRE team flourish under Mrs Skegro’s guidance and know that her impact will have a lasting impact on Avanti Fields pupils.

And it has been wonderful seeing the primary team continue to enrich the curriculum for our youngest learners. On Wednesday our Year 1 pupils attended a sea life trip and on Friday next week, the second Year 1 class will have an opportunity to visit the temple. It is through these experiences that we bring their learning to life!

Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school/college life for young people and their parents or carers. Principals Update

This morning I had the immense pleasure of sitting in the Year 8 assembly around Diversity. The assembly was led by Form Captains from each house within the year group, and 11 brave year 8 pupils presented to their year group of 186 pupils. Each form group collected information about the religious and ethnic backgrounds of their class and shared this during their presentation. Quotes were taken by other members of their form group around what diversity means to them and why it is important to celebrate, recognise and respect those with different backgrounds to our own. It was truly an assembly with the Avanti Way at it’s core.

This week a number of our Year 7 pupils have been in Swindon for their Avanti Quest residential. I look forward to hearing their stories and adventures next week.

And adventures abounded this week in our primary phase. On Monday we had a “Pets in Primary” event with a number of staff pets coming to say hello to our pupils. And today was the first of two Year 1 trips of pupils to visit the ISKCON temple in Leicester as part of their PRE curriculum.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and introduce our incoming Head Boy and Head Girl for the 2024-25 academic year. As our Year 11 pupils begin their GCSE exams, our Year 10 pupils step up to become the next round of leaders. A big well done to Priyan K (Head Boy), Meisha P (Head Girl), Rudra K (Deputy Head Boy) and Maya P (Deputy Head Girl) – I know you will be excellent leaders in the year to come.

And finally, I want to say a very big thank you to our PTFA. They do a fantastic job of supporting the school and it is very much appreciated by the staff and departments you have supported. Please read more below around their fundraising support.

Eco Warriors

Student Leaders are currently working on achieving the ECO flag for the school. To do this they have to do various projects to show that they are thinking about the environment. One of the projects that they want to do is to create a series of sculptures that have been made out of recycled materials, to raise awareness of how much single use plastic we actually use. We will be starting this after half-term.

To do this we are going to need plastic bottles, and lots of them. Any size. Also, nail varnish to paint on the bottles as apparently that will work better than acrylic. We are hoping to decorate an elephant for each of the houses so any shades of green, purple, blue, red, silver or gold will be very, very helpful

If you are able to donate anything that will be greatly appreciated.

PTFA Fundraise for the school

Thank you to everyone that has supported the PTFA, we have raised money to help fundraise for the school, money has gone to good causes helping our children to prosper. The attached poster shows where the money has gone so far, these are items that are not in the school budget. Cameras for our children’s to use, new books for the library and so much more. We had no garden, and a lot has gone on behind the scenes to create an area to grow our own vegetables. Sheds were purchased to store the equipment, green house storage for the exotic items. Our children can now learn to grow their own. Over 拢38k has been invested for our children’s future. We want to grow this further, just support us by attending the events and enjoying yourselves, all contributions go to the school. We need more volunteers, and any contributions are welcome.

It is always exciting getting to meet future pupils of Avanti.

Today, we also had our Reception pupils visit a local farm, and earlier in the week, Year 7 and 8 pupils competed in the Junior Maths Challenge.

If you would like to help the PTFA raise money for the benefit of our pupils please email avantifieldsptfa@gmail.com.

On Wednesday this week, it was the celebration of the Ramanavami Festival, a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Rama. On Sunday, the school will be hosting an event between 2pm 鈥 6pm for members of our community. I look forward to joining some of you at the festival. Further details are provided in the Community Updates section below.

Can we kindly remind parents to provide the school at least 48 hours notice prior to any medical or dental appointments for their children. The admin team have begun to notice a trend of ‘last minute appointments’. This has meant that parents have arrived at school and requested to pick up their child straight away. For our admin team, they then have to leave their posts to manually collect the pupil, rather than having their classroom teacher already notified of the upcoming absence and sending the pupil down. Should you have a known absence for your child, can you please complete the following form via our website: /avantifields/absence-requests/

Earth day

Don鈥檛 forget it is Earth Day dress up on Monday 22nd听April. Pupils are encouraged to wear something green, blue, flowery or even a home-made costume that represents something about our beautiful world!

We are also very excited to be holding our afterschool Earth Day event on Monday 22nd听April at 3.00pm. All classes have been working on creating earth day stalls to raise money towards our school鈥檚 forest school project. At the beginning of the academic year the pupils helped to plant small saplings in the soon-to-be forest school area and yesterday we had a specialist design company come to visit the site to provide example forest school space designs!

Please come along to support the continued development of this space and help fundraise for this project!

Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

We will be reflecting on World Water Day which was on the 22nd of March, and why children think the right to clean water is such an important right.

You may want to talk about possible reasons including:

  • Our bodies are made up of over 60% water and we need clean water to keep them working properly and to stay alive.
  • Pollution of our oceans, rivers and waterways can have a serious impact on all living things.
  • Water is important to generate power in some places and it is a better for the environment than burning fossil fuels.

Here is an activity you can do at home. Each year World Water Day identifies a theme. Take a look at the World Water Day website to find out what this year鈥檚 theme is. Make a poster or display to promote it and decide on one action that you will take. Can you link the them to Articles 24 and 27?

Year 7 Avanti Quest Residential – PGL Swindon

We are getting excited for our Year 7 pupils to go on their Avanti Quest residential from Monday 29/04 to Friday 03/05. We held our parent briefing evening this week and both staff and pupils are excited for the adventures to come.

Talent Show

I want to say a massive thank you to Miss Olusanya for her organisation of the inaugural Talent Show! Miss Olusanya led a fantastic team of staff and student helpers to make the evening happen. It was fantastic to see the wide range of talents displayed by our secondary pupils; singing, dancing, poetry composition and reading, martial arts displays as well as a number of pupils who displayed their musical and theatrical abilities. It was truly an inspiring evening and was lovely to see our students shine. And although as principal I shouldn鈥檛 have favourites, I would like to put out a special shout out to Jai Ganesh, Heet and Gavinjit for their rap about the school.

“I’m up in DT, making stuff like Mr Maker, switch to food tech baking stuff like I’m a baker. Go up to Maths, I do equations on my calculator, if you ain’t tryna stack the paper then I’ll see you later. Finally break, then ima go get a snack. I like the fresh air, it gets the stress off my back,听pull up my pants because I ain’t tryna sag, tuck in my shirt and look smart and attached.

Now let’s go to history, we’re learning about a mystery, it’s about Jack the ripper, how he put people out of their myseries, he was sick in the head, he didn’t feel no sympathy, he snuck into houses and hurt them with a brutal injury.

Yeah, we up in PE, yeah we’re gonna shoot some hoops. Slap my Jordans on, yeah you know we don’t were dupes. Feeling kinda hungry, can’t wait to eat some food, and we’re learning everything, football, rugby, tennis too.

Finally lunch, yeah imma go get a munch, feeling kinda hungry so imma go get a bunch. When you bite into the pastry, you always hear the crunch, and the food so tasty, knocks you out like a punch. Finish my food, heading straight to the MUGA, hang out with my mates ’cause you know we love each other. It’s as if we’re brothers from another mother and if one gets in trouble, you know we’ll always back each听other.

Lunch is now over, I’m going straight to English, I don’t want to read the tempest, I’m just waiting for it to finish. I need to pattern up because I turned into a menace, I need to pass my GCSE to fly to Venice.

School is now over and it almost broke my shield, teachers are like therapists, they always get me healed. The teachers are the best and I’m saying that for real, and every day is the best day at Avanti Fields.”

Principals Update

As we head towards the Easter holidays, I want to recognise what a busy half-term we have had. With only 4 weeks, it has felt like we鈥檝e opened and closed the term at the same time, all while putting some amazing opportunities in place for our pupils. This week our Reception pupils attended a dinosaur workshop and we had the joy of seeing the Year 1 Easter bonnet parade.

Today the entire school has celebrated Gaura Purnima and Holi. As we observe the birthday of Sri Chaitanya called Gaura Purnima, the day of the golden, full moon. This year’s celebration had both a classroom discussion and a visit to Worship Hall. Students and staff听 participated in the听 ceremonial abhishek (bathing) of Sri Chaitanya, accompanied with kirtan. And all members of our school community enjoyed a special festival day lunch.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr Clothier for his work within the PRE department since October. Mr Clothier joined us to cover Miss K.P. Patel鈥檚 sabbatical and has seamlessly joined the team, become a role model for our pupils and built some fantastic relationships along the way. We wish Mr Clothier all the best in his next steps. In the same vein, I want to wish Miss Devalia all the best as she begins her maternity leave after the Easter break.

Reading Rampage 2024

Reading Rampage 2024 is well under way with our Year 7 students having the opportunity to take part in author talks as well as a range of challenges. Authors during the live talks were very impressed with the high standard of questions being asked by the Avanti Fields students!

There have also been many challenges set up through the programme for students to really be involved in the programme and gain a more detailed insight into the books they are reading. We have had some impressive alternative book covers which the authors themselves have been impressed with. SJ Willis, the writer of 鈥楤ite Risk鈥 stated, 鈥淲ow this is FANTASTIC! Congratulations to the artist鈥 and Dee Benson, the author of 鈥楪low Up Lara Bloom鈥 commented, 鈥淭his is fantastic! Really captures the essence of the story.鈥 Other comments were also made from the author and illustrator of 鈥楩inn Jones Was Here鈥 with both saying that the book cover 鈥渞eally sums up the book beautifully鈥. Well done to our students!

Students are encouraged to continue to check Google Classroom for updates on challenges and parents are able to view some of the great things that our students are involved in by following Avanti English on X (formerly Twitter) @AFS_English

Oxford Unlocked Residential

On Thursday 14th March year 10 pupils had an enrichment opportunity to visit St Edmund Hall at Oxford University. Over the course of two days, they had an action-packed programme to give them an insight into university life and entry requirements to raise aspirations. The pupils were a credit to the school and share some of their insights below:
鈥淭he student finance, A-levels information and all of the other events were all very helpful and gave me a better insight for college, university and beyond. Personally, the activities were all very fun and educative. I am very grateful for this opportunity which has cleared some questions about higher education and doing it in a fun way.鈥
Dhiaan N
鈥淎 few of my highlights from the trip was that I loved the city and campus tour because I really got to see what the university had to offer. I also really enjoyed the evening activity with our groups because it was quite interactive and fun. The Q and A also really helped as I got a better understanding of the university and the degrees that they offer and what A-Levels I would have to take in order to study those degrees.鈥
Greemy H
鈥淭he trip itself was inspiring and really insightful, the information given was helpful and above all, the experience was amazing.鈥
Vibhish S
鈥淚t was a very valuable and informative experience, as well as lots of fun. The maths taster session was very interesting and the q and a session with student ambassadors were engaging and extremely helpful. I have learnt a lot of new things about university experiences that I will take away with me.鈥

Girls in Computing event – Thursday 14th听March 2023

The Girls in Computing event, run by Jaspal Singh (Director of Academic ICT and digital technologies –听Nxt Gen Innovators), was aimed at encouraging girls to think about choosing Computing/IT as a GCSE option and/or as a career. It was an inspiring event which encouraged the year 9 girls to really think about their options for GCSE and potentially choose a career in the field of computing and technology, which they may previously have never considered. The event was fun packed with much ‘food for thought’, group challenges and competitions.

Students feedback:

Dhriti Lakhani – 9 Water

“I liked the event as everyone had a chance to participate and complete new challenges. It has also encouraged me to pick computer science as one of my options for GCSE.”

Yashani Teli – 9 Water

“I think that the Girls in Computing event was an incredible experience and I really enjoyed it. If I had the opportunity to do it again, I would. The visitors were really nice, and the activities were unique and fun. Thank you so much for inviting me”.

Principals Update

Yesterday the entire school had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! WBD is a growing event in our annual school calendar and we hope to see it become even bigger next year. Please read below more details of our WBD celebrations specific to primary and secondary.

Last night, while still in WBD costumes, the senior staff welcomed our incoming Year 6 pupils and outlined our transition programme for them and their families. Although it was a virtual event, it was lovely to see the confidence shine with our newest pupils who were brave enough to ask questions about what starting secondary school will be like.

Finally, today is International Women’s Day. Imaging a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about discrimination. IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere.

Year 9 National Space Centre trip

7th February 2024

We took 12 year 9 students to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The event was to look at how Mathematics is used in a space context. There were students from 7 other schools in the City of Leicester.

The students had a brief introduction about the day and then getting to know each other. They then undertook a maths trail inside the centre, looking at the all the presentations on offer at the National Space Centre. The students had an informative time looking at all the props used by astronauts in space. This was certainly an eye opener for all the students there! Some of the skills here were how young learners from different schools worked together to complete the Maths trail.

The students then had to work together to produce a space 鈥榟ouse鈥 that would hold resources for visiting astronauts on a space station. Students had to make their model with jelly babies and match sticks! Students were in inter school groups 鈥 so it was great that our students performed well students from other schools. Some of our students were in the winning space 鈥榟ouse鈥 group.

After lunch, students took part in an activity based on how countries looked after scare resources in terms of recycling and costs. This was an activity based on other schools competing. Our students did really well, and they seemed to enjoy the experience of trying to allocate valuable resources in a competing world, taking into account populations, cost of resources, timelines to name a few ideas to consider.

After that, students were given the opportunity to attend a lecture from a university professor. The lecture was based on Einstein and his ideas on motion. This was quite a difficult type of learning 鈥 a new experience really, however quite a bit of maths concept was covered. This included.

  • Speed, distance, time including graphs.
  • Pythagoras Theorem
  • Motion in 2D plane
  • Velocity and average speed
  • Equations of motion.

All our students were a credit to the school and themselves and I know they had a lovely day out exploring maths in a space context.

Year 7/8 Girls Football

A successful football season for the girls as they made it through to the final in the 11 a-side competition after becoming East Leicester City Champions. Unfortunately we lost to Lancaster but the girls were incredible in their performances and achievements throughout the tournament.

KS4 Girls Football

A successful football season for the KS4 girls too as they made it through to the final in the 11 a-side competition after becoming East Leicester City Champions. Unfortunately we lost to Babington but the girls were incredible in their performances and achievements throughout the tournament.

Girls Futsal

Again both the teams (Year 8 and KS4) put in fantastic performances in the girls futsal tournaments. The KS4 girls got through to the final against Moat who we unfortunately lost out to just 1-0. The Year 8 team became joint first winners with Crown Hills who just pipped us to the finals on goal difference 14-11. But the girls should be immensely proud of their achievements with such incredible talent on the pitch.

The school is pleased to announce that we will be having an all- school talent show on April 11th if anyone interested in performing should sign up with Ms.Olusanya. More information regarding Purchasing tickets will be available soon.

Principals Update

Today is the ‘National Offer Day’ for incoming Year 7 pupils and their families. We want to take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome our incoming cohort to Avanti Fields School. Detailed information regarding our transition programme will be shared with all applicants on Monday 4th March.

This week school staff attended the AST planned Ethos INSET day which focussed on how we can create spaces for meaningful dialogue. Staff had opportunities to practice active listening, understand what it takes to build trust quickly within a small group of people and begin thinking about how our training can be used to launch ‘sanga’ sessions for our pupils.

Next week has our annual World Book Day activities planned for both Primary and Secondary pupils on Thursday 7th March. I am looking forward to seeing the literary costumes that our students come dressed in!

Hand, foot and mouth disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common infection that causes mouth ulcers and spots on the hands and feet.

It鈥檚 most common in young children听鈥 particularly those under听10 鈥 but can affect older children and adults as well.

Hand, foot and mouth disease can be unpleasant, but it will usually clear up by itself within 7 to 10 days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home.

The infection is not related to foot and mouth disease, which affects cattle, sheep and pigs.

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease

The symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease usually develop between 3 and 5 days after being exposed to the infection.

The first symptoms may include:

  • a high temperature (fever),听usually听around 38掳C听to 39掳C (100.4-102.2掳F)
  • a general sense of feeling unwell
  • loss of appetite
  • coughing
  • a听听and mouth

Mouth ulcers

After听1 or 2 days, red spots appear on the tongue and inside the mouth.

These quickly develop into larger yellow-grey听听with red edges.

The ulcers can be painful and make eating, drinking and swallowing difficult. They should pass within a week.

Spotty rash and blisters

Soon after the mouth ulcers appear, you鈥檒l probably notice a rash made up of small, raised red spots on the skin.

These typically develop on the fingers, the backs or palms of the hand, the soles of the feet, and occasionally on the buttocks and groin.

The spots听may then turn into small听听with a grey centre.

The听spots and blisters can sometimes be听itchy or uncomfortable and typically听last up to 10听days.

What to do if you or your child has hand, foot and mouth disease

If you have hand, foot and mouth disease, the best thing to do is to stay at home until you鈥檙e feeling better. There鈥檚 no cure for it, so you have to let it run its course. Please seek medical advice.

Celebrating Mathematical Minds of Avanti Fields School

8 of our students from year 10 recently participated in the prestigious Regional Maths Feast event, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to excellence in mathematical education. This annual competition draws the brightest young mathematicians from Leicestershire, challenging them with problems that test their numerical agility, logical reasoning, and creative thinking.

Our school’s strategy was to foster a collaborative environment where students could learn from each other, sharing insights and strategies. This approach proved invaluable, as it not only prepared our team for the wide range of problems, they would face but also helped them develop vital soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and time management.

The competition was fierce, with schools from across the nation bringing their best and brightest, our school emerged as a strong contender. We are proud to announce that our team achieved emerged VICTORIOUS, securing top positions in several categories. This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our students and the guidance of their teachers.
